On...Republican Reform

The New Right

Brand-names are very useful. The GOP is far from ruined as many wishful thinking wags would like to suggest. Diminished under Bush/Cheney? No doubt. In hibernation? Yes. In need of new blood and new vision? Definitely.

Included here are 3 essays all dealing with this theme.
Hopefully the GOP can be molded along these lines.

And more importantly, Dick Cheney can shut up and go back to Wyoming. When did he get so talkative? Even when he's right about something it seems dirty and cold.

Time to revist my old doctrine of convervative virtues. On...Principles. Always good for a refresher.

On...New Foundations, Covering Jesus, & Tea

New Deal, Fair Deal, Great Society, New Foundations=More Bureaucracy, Less Liberty

Obama has a new slogan for the week, I guess the New Era of Responsibility was just too hot of a handle. In his Georgetown speech he gave the old heave-hoe to Responsibility (fitting) and stuffed in "New Foundations." Foundations of what? I could be quick and snide and say 'socialism,' but I think he means a new world vision of...oh, yeah, socialism and a powerhouse executive running the show. Maybe Obama has read a little too much about Aristotle's philosopher-king obsessions and is making it his own.

Ross Douthat warning on not dismissing TEA PARTIES

and a flash on how the Obama Administration ordered all images, including Jesus to be shrouded while he gave his speech. In which I say, if he doesn't want a policy speech to be tied to religion he shouldn't give it at a CATHOLIC JESUIT SCHOOL!!! Think a bit people. I would have told the President's aides "Thank you for thinking of us, but please find another venue."

On...Iran, Israel, Obama, & Bibi

This interview between the Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is making the rounds. Here it is below, along with Ross Douthat's blog-related post.

From...Ross Douthat

I'm posting one of my favorite bloggers, Ross Douthat, and his recent comments about the Pope, Africa, and AIDS. He currently is employed by The Atlantic, but starting in a few weeks he's moving over the New York Times. He is one of the most solid Catholic political intellectuals I know. He also blogs on movies and baseball. He's right up my alley.

On...The Animal Spirits of Capitalism

Golden Geese and Animal Spirits

Michael Barone has an interesting piece in US News & World Report called Crushing those Animal Spirits. He raises some good questions regarding how much the investment class will allow itself to be taxed before they head for the hills and squirrel their money away instead of investing it. I've used the Golden Goose metaphor in many conversations, he uses Animal Spirits but it does come from the same dilemma.

I'll sum it up for you.

Democrats love the golden goose [capitalism] but are impatient and want more golden eggs so they squeeze the goose's neck and prod his belly and generally threaten to kick its ass. The majority knows they can't push too hard for they risk killing the goose, which they rely on to make the world a better place and provide numerous dimensions of equality. So they tinker with now much they can shackle the goose and still have him be cooperative. And by all means they can't let that goose fly around willy-nilly and unregulated. I thought Obama was pretty smart during the campaign because he appeared to know how to shackle the goose and get a few more eggs out of it without killing it. But then came his waterboarding Stimulus Plan, crowbar Bailouts, and then the grand-daddy Iron Maiden Budget. (Poor Goose!) Now I don't think he has a much of clue on how to get the goose to work with the Democrats. He seems prepared to use this "crisis" as a "great opportunity" to shake the hell out of this already sick goose. Some Dems like Evan Bayh and crazy CNBC econ-man Jim Cramer are starting to notice how hard he is prepared to throttle the goose and it should scare them and anyone who is fond of the golden goose.

Stuff the Beast
Another theory, more devious, yet effective regarding Obama's overarching scheme of EuroSocialism is called "Stuff the Beast." first mentioned in Ross Douthat's piece called "The Pursuit of Social Democracy." If this is really what he is doing even my post-election bi-partisan spirit will be on life support.

On...The Future of Capitalism

Bailouts and Purges

If nothing else the whole bailout, stock market hiccup, etc is giving the nation a small economic lesson. Unfortunately the professor is a hungover drunk with a failing marriage and a hodgepodge degree in Marxist-Adam Smith tomfoolery. Which is the wonder of Economics. Nobody really knows much and everyone is tampering with the thing. Poking and prodding the carcass. Many suggest leaving it alone is best (see Joel Stein in LA Times), others praise the bailout (A Bill that Deserved to Pass), others look at the big picture and realize the painting has already been ripped off the museum wall and stuffed in a trunk. What is the common man to do? According to many of the political commercials they should be really scared and angry at Big Oil and Wal-Mart and Evil Banks. Ah, the 1930s all over again.

I myself am not astute enough in economics to make real observations that I feel are accurate at this point, and I don't like chasing black swans, but anyone else is free to get a dialogue going on that. But I do have the sense that old systems are shifting and the capitalists are running to the socialists in government for security.

Our politicians should have done what the founders have always suggested--do nothing rash. Sit on it, let our passions cool, then make formative decisions. The bailout bill was a total rejection of Enlightenment coolness of mind. It was a panic-filled free-for-all and buy-off. Instead using logic, we are further blending the state and the market in an orgy of passion and fear. The trudge towards the socialist twilight is usually not a good thing. It puts too much power in too few of hands, especially politician and bureaucrat's hands. We will take a further step in that direction is Barack Obama wins and a Democratic congress injects an European health care system into our bloodstream. If our economy is truly on the brink like so many doom and gloom pundits believe, this will be a potentially troubling move. I tend to be an optimist and believe it is hard to bring down a $14 trillion economy, but universal health care should not be in the cards at this moment (if ever).

I also want to say the whole Wall Street vs. Main Street simplicity is juvenile. Us versus Them. Nice. I love how the populists use the term Main Street as a good thing. They might want to check out where the term really came from--Sinclair Lewis' Main Street (1920). A scathing satire on the idiocy and backwardness of small town life. Clinging to guns and God fits the Main Street motif nicely. But oh, the wisemen will come and show them the light. Fun stuff. Further discussion on the impact the economy is having on the working class can be found in Ross Douthat's new blog posting HERE

Jacob Weisberg from Slate.com has a interesting dissection of the labeling of our new economic arrangement. The article sortof jumpstarted this blog.

Also two excellent economic websites are RealClearMarkets and The Skeptical Optimist.
